Breaking MLB News: We Have Another Manager Firing — Second One in 3 Days

For the second time this past week, a bottom-dwelling National League team has sent their manager packing with a pink slip, as the Colorado Rockies have fired longtime dugout boss Bud Black.

Black had been the Rockies' manager for nine years, compiling a 544-690 record for a .440 win percentage. They're coming off back-to-back 100-loss seasons, and 2025 was looking even worse than the previous two, as they have a woeful 7-33 mark thus far.

A local Denver-area sports writer felt sorry for Black, as the Rockies have continued to do nothing to improve the team, leaving the long-time manager twisting in the wind.

"Front office/ownership have given him basically nothing during his tenure with the Rockies. Yet he's going to be the fall guy while ownership continues to DO NOTHING TO IMPROVE THE TEAM," wrote Rachel Strand of Clutch Points.

The 7-33 record probably belies just how bad this team has become. The Rockies—playing in the best offensive environment in all of baseball—are second-worst in MLB (29th) in offense, with just 133 runs scored. They're 28th in OPS (.646) and 28th in batting average (.219). Again, this is in the thin air of Coors Field.

Third base coach Warren Schaeffer will take over as interim manager for the remainder of the season, while hitting coach Clint Hurdle, who managed the Rockies for eight years in the early 2000s, has been named Schaeffer’s bench coach.

The Pittsburgh Pirates let go their manager, Derek Shelton, just three days ago.
