MLB Rumors: 5 Teams Chasing Free Agent Jordan Montgomery

Jordan Montgomery is the top left-handed starter still available on the free agent market, and with that, he has plenty of interested suitors.

Montgomery had the best season of his seven-year major league career in 2023, beginning the season with the St. Louis Cardinals then moving on to the Texas Rangers where he was a key part of the World Series champions. He posted a career-best 3.20 ERA along with another personal best in ERA+ with 138. He also struck out a career-high 166 batters.

Insider John Heyman gives us the goods on the top suitors still in the mix for the breakout southpaw.

San Francisco Giants

After signing Korean star outfielder Jung Hoo Lee to a six-year $113 million deal, the Giants are still looking to spend some more big-time cash this winter, and are certainly in the market on the pitching side. Heyman sees them as a prime suitor to outspend their rivals in the Montgomery chase.

Los Angeles Angels

A team that hasn’t done much yet this off-season, aside from losing Shohei Ohtani, the Angels are another team that’s looking to add to their pitching staff, and they find themselves in the Montgomery hunt as well.

New York Yankees

Montgomery spent the first few years of his career in the Bronx, and the team would love to have him back now that he’s broken through as a front-line starter.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are certainly in the mix here as well, according to Heyman, which could make for an interesting bidding war between the bitter rivals.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies, a team that has done quite well in free agency in recent years, could look to add another lefty to their rotation, and Montgomery is on their radar, according to Heyman.
