Injury Update On Detroit Tigers Casey Mize

He underwent Tommy John surgery last June.

On Wednesday, the Detroit Tigers revealed that starter Casey Mize also underwent back surgery around the same time.

Mize said his back has been bothering him for years and that it was something that gradually got worse over time.

The twenty-five-year-old is scheduled to begin a throwing program this week.

Mize's recovery from the back surgery delayed the start of his throwing program, but he's been cleared to start playing catch this week, which appears to suggest that rehabbing the elbow is of greater concern right now.

Regardless, even if he avoids any setbacks of any sort, Mize will be sidelined for most, if not all, of the 2023 season.

Over his first three seasons in the majors, the former first-overall pick has yet to live up to the hype, recording a 4.29 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, with 148 strikeouts over 188.2 innings of work.

He's still a couple of months away from facing hitters, and we likely won't get a clear timetable for his return until then.
