Kansas City Royals Sign Veteran Catcher

Bringing him back.

The Kansas City Royals have signed catcher Jose Briceno to a minor-league contract.

Briceno elected to explore free agency this offseason but ultimately could not find a job anywhere and decided a return to the Royals was his best option.

Last season, at Triple-A Omaha, the thirty-year-old slashed a healthy .252/.298/.405, with four home runs, 21 RBIs and 18 runs scored over 131 at-bats.

Briceno has not appeared in the majors since the 2020 season with the Los Angeles Angels. For his major league career, the catcher holds a .238 batting average, with five home runs, 10 RBIs and 12 runs scored over 48 games.

He'll likely spend the majority of the season in the Royals' upper minors.
