MLB Rumors: Red Sox In "Heavy Discussions" With All-Star Free Agent

It appears that another All-Star shortstop may be close to coming off the board. And that Boston Red Sox fans may still get to breathe a big sigh of relief. A new report from Jon Heyman has the BoSox in "heavy discussions" with their own Xander Bogaerts.

Whether it's the sudden realization of just what the cost of doing business is these days with all the other massive contracts being handed out, or some movement on either side, this is a big improvement on recent rumors of Bogaerts essentially writing off a return to Beantown.

Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Red Sox owners were on a call with team execs at the Winter Meetings last night. It might be the thing that chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom needed in order to get the go-ahead to move forward with an offer to try to get it done.

It's also possible that with the San Franciso Giants now having $360M burning a hole in their pocket, and the Chicago Cubs being another very serious suitor—and spender—that the Red Sox started to panic.

No deal is done yet, but it at least sounds possible that Xander Bogaerts could still be returning to Boston. We'll keep you posted.
