MLB Rumors: New York Mets Have CF Backup Plan If Nimmo Goes Elsewhere

By a long shot, Brandon Nimmo is the top free agent center fielder on the market. The seven-year New York Mets veteran has a huge number of suitors wooing him, and he's expected to haul in a contract close to $150M or more.

According to one source, it could even be getting out of the Mets' range.

"There's a sense that the Nimmo market is getting a little away from the Mets," says the report, but at the same time "he'd be a really tough guy to lose."

And while the two sides remain in touch, they're not scheduled to meet at the Winter Meetings this week.

If for some reason Nimmo heads elsewhere, the Plan B would be a big step down offensively, but not defensively:

Insider Jon Heyman says the Mets will consider free agent Kevin Kiermaier in CF if Nimmo departs. Kiermaier, 32, is a 3-time Gold Glover in center for the Tampa Bay Rays, but has only batted above .230 once in the past five seasons.
