Pittsburgh Pirates Claim 2 Players Off Waivers

The Pittsburgh Pirates are being active on the waiver wire, as they claimed both Zack Collins and Junior Fernandez. Both players have been sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis for the beginning of their tenures with the team.

Collins was recently designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays, but he is now getting a chance for a fresh start with the Pirates. The 27-year-old catcher appeared in 26 games for Toronto this season, where he had four home runs, 10 RBIs, and a .194 batting average. If he receives a call-up to Pittsburgh before the end of the season, he will be aiming to turn those rough numbers around.

Fernandez was DFA'd by the St. Louis Cardinals, and when it was announced, it seemed very likely that another club would claim him. He has had a very solid year for the Cardinals, as he sported a 2.93 ERA in 13 games. Don't be surprised to see him get called up shortly, as he has the potential to provide an upgrade to the Pirates' bullpen.
