Tampa Bay Rays Forced To Place Two Key Players On IL

The Tampa Bay Rays have made a number of moves today, the most notable of which is the placement of ace pitcher Shane McClanahan on the IL. The video of the All-Star hurler coming down with an injury during pregame warmups on Monday was alarming, and it has indeed led to an IL stint.

He'll be joined on the injured list by INF/OF Brandon Lowe, who has a right triceps contusion.

McClanahan had said after he was scratched from his start with a shoulder injury that "we’re actually pretty optimistic about it. We don’t think it’s anything major, hopefully." But for now, he'll have to rest it for at least 15 days.

As noted by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the injury McClanahan has would be treated first with a cortisone shot, and if it 'takes', then he could be ready to go again at the end of the 15 days. The earliest he can return is Sept. 15th.

As for Lowe, he was hit on his elbow by a pitch last Friday, and will give it a rest on the 10-day IL; he's eligible to return on Sept. 7th.

To replace the two players, the Rays have recalled INF/OF Vidal Bruján and RH Calvin Faucher from Triple-A Durham.
