Diamondbacks Outfielder Suffers Wrist Fracture

Talk about adding injury to insult. Just 2 days after being optioned to Triple-A, Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Pavin Smith has suffered a fractured wrist.

The 26-year-old will have his wrist immobilized for six weeks, and be out of action at least 6-to-8 weeks, according to farm director Josh Barfield. Smith was diving for a ball when the tip of his glove got caught in the grass, causing the wrist to fracture. Barfield said Smith's fracture is nondisplaced and there's some ligament damage, but it's hoped that he would not require surgery.

Smith had a decent rookie season for the Snakes in 2021, batting .267 with a .732 OPS, 11 home runs and 49 RBIs. But 2022 has been a struggle, and Smith was recently in a 23-game stretch in which he hit just .152, leading to his demotion.

ari“He went down (to the farm) with a great attitude,” Barfield said. “He took a lot of accountability. He has high expectations of himself and how well he can perform. He reported (to Reno) the next day and was in the lineup a few hours after landing and was ready to get to work. The timing is unfortunate. The injury is unfortunate. Hopefully, he can get back for the end of the season.”

Overall this season, he's batting .207 with a .652 OPS, while the power has been up, with 9 home runs and 31 RBIs thus far.

Smith was the D-Backs' 7th overall pick in the 2017 draft.
