MLB Rumors: Former All-Star Closer To Retire

After a 12-year career, with three All-Star appearances, and 220 saves, it appears this might be the end of the line for reliever Greg Holland.

After his release last month by the Texas Rangers, the 36-year-old Holland "is believed to be retiring", according to MLB Insider Jon Heyman

Best-known for his lock-down role as the closer for six years with the Kansas City Royals, Holland helped the team to a World Series title in 2015. He had two Top 10 finishes in Cy Young voting in 2013 and 2014, when he posted well over 40 saves each year.

Holland then moved to Colorado, where he led the National League in saves in 2017 with 41. Since then, he bounced around to four different teams, and even spent two more seasons with the Royals in 2020 and 2021.

Texas signed him to a minor league deal this spring, but then released him after starting the season by allowing 3 home runs and 4 earned runs in 4.2 innings. He became a free agent once again three weeks ago, but it appears, according to Heyman, that he was unable to land another gig.

With a 3.14 ERA and the 220 saves, it's an impressive resume for Holland.
