Athletics Designate Outfielder For Assignment

Earlier on Monday, the Oakland Athletics claimed Gabe Klobosits off waivers from the Washington Nationals. Now, to make room for the reliever, they have designated Luis Barrera for assignment.

Barrera made his major league debut last season, but it was very limited in size. In eight plate appearances over six games, he had two hits, including a double. Overall, he wasn't too bad when called upon, but the A's still viewed him as expendable to open up for Klobosits.

Barrera spent the majority of last season with Triple-A Las Vegas, however. In 96 games with the team, he had four home runs, 37 RBIs, and a .276 batting average. With numbers like these, it's fair to say that he hit well for contact, but his power-hitting ability is not particularly high.

Nevertheless, it will be intriguing to see if another club decides to take a chance on Barrera. At a minimum, it shouldn't be too hard for him to land a minor league deal.
