White Sox DH To Have Surgery

Chicago White Sox designated hitter Yermin Mercedes will be out for the next six to eight weeks, as he is set to have hand surgery.

Mercedes had quite an eventful first season in the majors. After starting the season with a .415 batting average and looked like a candidate for AL Rookie of the Year. Yet, that did not come to fruition, as he cooled off immensely after that and was sent down to Triple-A in July. That is where he would stay for the remainder of the campaign. Yet, that almost didn't happen, as he announced his retirement on Instagram following his demotion, but then changed his mind immediately.

Thus, heading into this season, Mercedes was looking to cement himself a spot back on Chicago's major league roster. Although he certainly could be able to once he recovers, this pause definitely does not do him any favors.

In 68 games last season, Mercedes has seven home runs, 37 RBIs, and a .271 batting average. If he can find some of the magic he had at the beginning of the season last year, he could be a huge force for the White Sox in 2022. Let's see what happens on that front.
