New York Mets Sign Reliever

The New York Mets have signed R.J. Alvarez to a minor league contract.

Alvarez last appeared in the majors during the 2015 season with the Oakland Athletics. Since then, he has been stuck in the minors. However, the 30-year-old still has the potential to get back into the majors, and perhaps he will do just that with the Mets.

Alvarez spent the 2021 season with Triple-A Nashville. Overall, he had himself a pretty decent campaign. Although he had a 0-3 record, he also had a respectable 4.08 ERA and 44 strikeouts. He wasn't dominant, but he did show signs of overall dependability. Even if he does not end up making the Mets' major league roster, he will provide them with more depth.

In 31 career games between the San Diego Padres and Athletics, Alvarez has a 0-0 record, 7.39 ERA, and 32 strikeouts. It will be interesting to see if the longtime minor leaguer will have the opportunity to play in the bigs again.
