MLB Rumors: 2 Teams Favorites to Sign Kyle Schwarber

Free agent slugger Kyle Schwarber was very close to signing a new contract before the MLB lockout and now has to wait for operations to open up again. It sounds like that's on the horizon as both sides are finally meeting face to face. Schwarber, like many free agents can get ready for the offers to come rolling in soon, and recently two teams have been deemed favorites to land his services.

Philadelphia Phillies

Rumor has the Phillies almost had Schwarber sign on the dotted line back in late 2021 and expectation is the team goes all-in to try and get him locked into their lineup. The team could use some more protection for Bryce Harper and more specifically from the left side of the plate. Schwarber is coming off a season where he was named an All-Star for the first time and could become the everyday left fielder in Philadelphia.

Another factor here is the expected announcement of the universal DH, which makes the decision a little bit easier to swallow for management in Philly. In 2021, Schwarber hit 32 HR and finished with a .266 batting average in 113 games. A 50-HR season was within reach before injuries showed their ugly face.

Boston Red Sox

From all accounts the Red Sox loved having Schwarber on the team as he quickly made himself a likeable teammate in the club house. Off the field he became a star with the fanbase and the team sees him as a legit option for their roster in 2022. He's more versatile than people give him credit for as the 28-year-old can play a decent first base to go along with the corner outfield positions.

The Red Sox have been listening to trade offers on a few of their players and if a hole is created at first base, DH or the outfield, bringing back Schwarber will be top of mind. While the Phillies are the favorites, the Red Sox are a close second in the sweepstakes.
