Detroit Tigers Win The Javier Baez Sweepstakes

The Detroit Tigers have signed star infielder Javier Baez to a six-year, $140 million contract.

Baez had multiple teams interested him, but the Tigers have emerged as victorious in the sweepstakes. This is the second big signing for the team this offseason, as they of course signed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez earlier this month.

Overall, Baez had a pretty solid 2021 campaign. In 138 games between the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets, he had 31 home runs, 87 RBIs and a .265 batting average. However, it also is important to note that he ended the year strongly after being dealt to the Mets. In 47 games, he had a .299 batting average and showed far more patience at the plate.

Over the course of his career, Baez has had a lot of success. He is a two-time All-Star and World Series Champion. Along with that, he has a Gold Glove Award (2020), Silver Slugger Award (2018), four Fielding Bible Awards (2016, 2017, 2018, 2020) and NLCS MVP (2016) on his resume. Now, he will be looking to continue to build on that with the Tigers.

In 862 career games, Baez has 149 home runs, 465 RBIs and a .264 batting average. Overall, this is a very good addition for the Tigers and it should make them another step closer to becoming a playoff team.
