Rumor: San Diego Padres To Pursue Anthony Rizzo This Winter

At the trade deadline, the San Diego Padres were interested in acquiring first baseman Anthony Rizzo, but the New York Yankees of course ended up adding him. However, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the Padres could once again try to add Rizzo, but this time through free agency. For this to occur, they would likely need to move Eric Hosmer, though.

Rizzo previously played for the Padres during the 2011 MLB season. In 49 games as a 21-year-old rookie, he had a home run, nine RBIs and a .141 batting average. During that following off-season, they traded Rizzo to the Chicago Cubs and he would blossom into a three-time All-Star. With that, he also won four Gold Glove Awards, a Silver Slugger Award, a Roberto Clemente Award, a Fielding Bible Award and of course, a World Series championship in 2016. It's a move that the Padres certainly would end up regretting pretty immediately.

In 141 games this season between the Cubs and Yankees, Rizzo had 22 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .248 batting average.

It will be interesting to see if San Diego adds him this winter. With the team having a disappointing 79-83 record this season, it seems that changes are needed.
