Gerrit Cole Booed Off The Mound at Yankee Stadium

Gerrit Cole has been one of the leading contenders (if not the leading contender) for the Cy Young Award all season. But he picked a very bad time to cough up a seven-spot. And the Bronx faithful let him know it...

Cole was pulled in the 6th inning after surrendering 10 hits and seven runs to the Cleveland Indians, in a game the New York Yankees simply HAD to win. They now trail the 2nd Wild Card spot by a game and a half (2 in the loss column).

Cole was booed off the mound, prompting play-by-play man John Sterling to remark, "Gee, he's been carrying the team all year," while analyst Suzyn Waldman remarked "tough crowd... What's wrong with these people?"

As Ken Davidoff of the New York Post observed, it was the Yankees' second straight "embarrassing defeat" at the hands of the sub-.500 Cleveland Indians.

Before he was lifted, Cole had a glance at the out-of-town scoreboard only to see that both the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox were winning their games handily. His reaction was NSFW, and as suggested in the tweet, turn down the volume if children are in the room:

The 5-0 Toronto lead and 4-0 Boston lead, combined with his own 4-0 deficit caused an expletive squawk from Cole; he wouldn't be feeling too much better three innings later when he was ushered to the showers, showered with boos.

Along with the Yankees' playoff hopes, Cole's Cy Young chances also took a big hit. His ERA jumped to 3.03, while chief competitor Robbie Ray of the Blue Jays continues to lead his team's staff in the 2nd half, now with a 12-5 record and 2.64 ERA.
