Top 3 Free Agent Destinations For 2B Slugger Brandon Lowe
Brandon Lowe certainly picked a good time to stay healthy for a full baseball season. 2026 was a contract year for the slugging second baseman, and if he was going to maximize his value on the free agent market, playing more than the 103 games he'd averaged over the previous four years would be critical.
Mission accomplished. Lowe played 150 games in his one and only season with the Pittsburgh Pirates while blasting 35 homers with 96 RBIs and an .824 OPS (121 OPS+).
Now he heads out into free agency able to command a nice contract, even at the age of 32 and with his injury history. Insider and former MLB GM Jim Bowden projects a 3-year, $45 million deal for Lowe. And Sportrac projects a 3-year contract worth $68.4 million. But where will it come from? He suggests these three teams as the best free agent destinations for him:
San Francisco Giants
As per usual, the Giants could use more pop in their lineup. Once again, they were in the bottom third of baseball in OPS and home runs. With Luis Arraez having been traded away at the deadline after less than year in tow, 2B is up for grabs for 2027 in San Fran. Installing Lowe there would also reunite him with Willy Adames in the infield; the two were the double-play combo when the Tampa Bay Rays reached the World Series in 2020.
San Diego Padres
Is it time for the Friars to finally move on from Jake Cronenworth? He had his worst year at the plate in '26, and upgrading from 7 homers and a .629 OPS at second to what Lowe can bring would be a pretty nice lineup boost.
Pittsburgh Pirates
It all went so well for Lowe in Pittsburgh in '26, both sides might very well want to re-up for more. If Bowden's 3 yrs/$45M projection is close to accurate, it's affordable for the Bucos, and they should be all over bringing back their best hitter.
