Report: Astros Could Make Another Kyle Tucker-Type Blockbuster
Houston fell 7-3 to the Chicago White Sox in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series, getting swept out of the playoffs at Daikin Park.
The Houston Chronicle raised the comparison in its postmortem on the season.
Pena is entering his final season of club control, the same spot Tucker was in before Houston traded him to the Cubs two winters ago rather than risk losing him for nothing in free agency.
Storyline That's Been Building Since The Deadline
MLB.com's Mark Feinsand floated Pena as a top trade candidate well before this year's deadline passed, framing it almost exactly the same way the Chronicle did now.
"We've seen this movie before," Feinsand wrote. "Pena is heading into his final year before free agency, so if the Astros are unable to extend him, they could look to trade him as they did with Kyle Tucker in his final year of control."

Houston ultimately held onto Pena through the summer, betting on a deep playoff run instead of cashing in early.
The Athletic's Chandler Rome had actually predicted the opposite back in July, arguing a summer trade could net a better return than waiting, pointing to the uncertainty hanging over the 2027 season as a reason to move sooner rather than later.
Houston went the other direction, and the gamble didn't pay off the way the front office hoped.
Pena was excellent in the time he did play this year, posting 3.7 bWAR with 22 home runs, a .277 batting average, and an .802 OPS across 112 games, numbers that only strengthen his trade value now that the calendar has turned to the winter decision point everyone saw coming.
What Pena Himself Is Saying
Pena didn't sound like someone eager to leave after Wednesday's loss. "I love this city, I love everything about the Astros," he said, adding that he hopes to stay in Houston long term.
Pena is represented by Scott Boras, and previous extension talks between the two sides reportedly broke down after Pena changed representation to Boras in the first place.
Former Astros GM Dana Brown addressed the earlier attempt without going into much detail. "We made attempts to sign both guys," Brown said, referring to Pena and pitcher Hunter Brown, "and that's where I'll leave it."

Houston also doesn't currently have a permanent general manager in place, with owner Jim Crane still working through that search, adding another layer of uncertainty to exactly who makes the final call on Pena's future.
If a trade does happen, the Tucker deal gives a sense of what Houston could expect back.
That trade brought Cam Smith, Isaac Paredes, and Hayden Wesneski from the Cubs, a package built around controllable young talent rather than purely established veterans.
With Carlos Correa still in the organization as a potential fallback at shortstop if he returns healthy, Houston at least has internal depth to lean on if it does decide Pena's final year of control is worth more in a trade than on the roster.
