3 Likely Landing Spots For Free Agent Freddy Peralta
It was an ugly Game 3 for Freddy Peralta in his first ever World Series start. But he'd already turned his free agent fortunes around significantly after a rough start to the year with the New York Mets (4.99 ERA). Peralta had a sparkling 1.08 postseason ERA through his first three playoff appearances with Tampa, including being named ALCS MVP. He also had a 0.96 ERA across his final five starts of the regular season.
Insider Jim Bowden has him ranked as the No. 2 free agent this winter on his big board in The Athletic.
"Despite his struggles in New York, he will enter this winter as the second-best starting pitcher on the open market. He is one of only two starting pitchers who have made at least 30 starts for four consecutive years. I’d like to see him remain in Tampa, but am not sure they’ll be able to play financially at the level it’s going to take to sign him now."
Bowden figures it'll take a five-year deal worth about $140 million, and that's much deeper than the pool the Rays typically swim in.
He figures these three teams are Peralta's best fits for landing spots:
San Diego Padres
The Padres rotation is going to need an overhaul, with Michael King, Robbie Ray, Casey Mize and Walker Buehler all hitting free agency. Peralta would be a nice addition to the top of the staff.
Chicago Cubs
Another team facing a major rotation reconstruction, the Cubs will watch Clay Holmes, Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Kevin Gausman and David Peterson all head to free agency. They will try to get in on the Peralta Sweepstakes.
Chicago White Sox
The Pale Hose were a shocking addition to the postseason dance this year, coming off three consecutive 100-loss seasons. Starting pitching depth was their downfall, in the end, with Sean Burke, Davis Martin and Noah Schultz the likely returnees, and none of them are guaranteed for success in 2027. The ChiSox could use an ace, and they will see if Peralta will be open to joining their ascending program.
