Yankees get another tough injury break with Jazz Chisholm going down

Just when Aaron Judge had finally returned to the lineup after a three-month absence, the New York Yankees will now have to do without another key hitter in their lineup. Jazz Chisholm Jr. suffered a sprained thumb in Tuesday night's game and will be going on the injured list.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been diagnosed with a sprained right thumb. He will be placed on the 10-day injured list. No baseball activities for 7-10 days.

In an odd twist, that IL placement won't take place until tomorrow, and in the meantime, Chisholm will be available to pinch-run Wednesday night. Anthony Volpe is being recalled to the major league roster and will arrive on Thursday. 

Chisholm to be shut down from baseball activities in Yankees injury blow

After this game, however, Chisholm will be shut down from all baseball activities for 7-10 days, reports Bryan Hoch. 

It's bad timing for the second baseman, who was on pace for his most games played in a season. But with only 18 games to go, and being out for more than half of them, he won't make it to the 147-game mark that he set for himself in 2024. 

Chisholm leads the American League in stolen bases, with 40 in his 134 games. He also has 19 homers and a .715 OPS. 

Jose Caballero will take over at second base, a spot where he's done well defensively the past few years, and actually should be an improvement on that side of the ball for Chisholm. Caballero has played six different positions in the field for the Yanks this season. 

At the plate, the team's swiss army knife has hit 13 home runs with 31 stolen bases to go with 47 RBIs while batting .235 with a .664 OPS. 

Volpe could also get a little time at second, per manager Aaron Boone.
