Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Apologizes to Blue Jays Fans For Controversial Comments

The firestorm that he created with his outrageous comments earlier this week was just too much to bear. Now, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has faced the media—and the fans—to apologize for saying that his 14-year, $500M contract was rewarding him for what he's already done, not what he's going to do in the future. 

The outrage from fans and followers of baseball everywhere (and likely within the offices of the Rogers Centre) made it obvious that this needed to be addressed.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr made a statement to media this afternoon:

“I regret my comments the other day. I felt from my heart that my fans and my teammates needed an apology from me. I’m going to continue working hard to make my contract great.”

Guerrero says he’s taken additional time to consider his comments and feels they don’t reflect what he wanted to say:

“It’s been a disappointing year for me. I couldn’t help my team to accomplish our goal. It’s hard for me.”

Guerrero says he apologized to his teammates today. He also spoke to his father about it:

“He told me what I did was wrong and to make sure that I do what I’m doing right now — to give my fans an apology.”

He also apologized to his teammates. He admitted that his Hall of Fame father convinced him (scolded him, perhaps?) to issue his apology.

The original comments, to make matters worse, were revealed in a Spanish-language interview the same day that the Blue Jays were officially eliminated from the playoffs. In case you missed it, it was as bad as it sounds:

And for those who want to give the benefit of the doubt and say it was a translation issue and he didn't really mean it... He doubled down on it later in the day when first confronted about the comments.
