Sonny Gray Could Land Massive Amount On Next Contract

We heard a shocking rumor earlier this month that Boston Red Sox ace Sonny Gray might actually retire after this, the best season of his career. But before the 36-year-old makes that call, he should consider this:

Red Sox insider Chris Cotillo of MassLive says if Gray doesn't retire, he'd be in line to "exceed" the three-year, $75 million deal he's on right now. 

Gray has gone 17-5 this season for Boston, with a 2.82 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP with a 146:45 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He'll head into the postseason as the BoSox' No. 1 starter. His numbers this season put him in the conversation with all-time Red Sox greats Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens. Cotillo notes that Gray was the only other pitcher aside from those two in Red Sox modern history to record 17+ wins, 140 strikeouts and a sub-2.80 ERA through 27 starts.  

As for the possibility of retirement for Gray, Cotillo says that's not just idle talk.  

"The Red Sox don’t believe that Gray, who turns 37 in November, is making an empty threat, and at least some in the organization believe retirement is truly on the table for him despite his renaissance season. Gray has very frequently had his two sons, Gunnar and Declan, around the team this season. Throughout the year, he has frequently stolen family time by taking one-day trips to his family’s home in Nashville on team off days, no matter where the Red Sox are playing."

We'll see if he feels another $75M+ for Gunnar & Declan's future is worth another few years in the big leagues.
