MLB Umpire Facing Discipline After Pulling Outrageous 'Power Move'

It was a wild scene in Colorado on Friday night when umpire Doug Eddings decided to call out Rockies rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon for... wait for it... wearing his hat a bit crooked. It all devolved from there, and by the end of it, St. Louis Cardinals manager Oli Marmol was ejected, the Rockies were granted an undeserved run on a brutal call at the plate, and Eddings is being destroyed all across baseball.

Rincon, a 24-year-old from the Dominican, was making his major league debut. In the middle of an at-bat, Eddings abruptly called time and ordered the kid to straighten his hat, which was tilted slightly to one side. It all unravelled for the rookie from there. He wound up surrendering three hits and three earned runs including an inside-the-park home run, in one-third of an inning.  

According to Marmol, Eddings justified the power move by stating, "The kid's not gonna wear his hat like that on my field!" When Marmol walked out to the mound to replace Rincón, he confronted Eddings about the unnecessary interruption. As the argument continued, Eddings retaliated by hitting incoming reliever Justin Bruihl with a pitch-clock violation and ejecting Marmol from the game. A furious Marmol repeatedly told Eddings to "grow up" on his way off the field.

Later in the inning, with the Cardinals out of challenges, Eddings blatantly blew a critical call at home plate, incorrectly ruling a Rockies runner safe to temporarily give Colorado the lead. Many around the game are saying he missed that call on purpose. 

"From where you're sitting, how do you miss that if you're Doug Eddings behind the plate?!" asked color analyst Brad Thompson, incredulously.

From Marmol, he was more direct, after the game:

"I had an issue with Doug," Marmol said. "Just Doug. He took it upon himself to tell our rookie pitcher the kid's 'not going to wear his hat on my field that way.' You got [former pitchers] Dontrelle Willis, CC Sabathia, Pedro Strop -- plenty of guys that have worn it way more tilted. I have an issue with that. That's just a power-hungry move, in my opinion.

"Some words exchanged there. Quite honestly, I thought it was pretty embarrassing on his end," Marmol said. "We have a kid making his debut, and in between an at-bat, he tells him that he needs to fix his hat and, 'The kid's not going to wear his hat like that on my field.' Last I checked, this is Coors Field (not his field), so I took issue with it."

Now, MLB has taken serious issue with Eddings. He is OUTTA THERE for the rest of the year.
