Marlins Address Sandy Alcantara Trade Talk

Former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara has been on the trade rumor mill for what seems like a few years now. But the Miami Marlins have only thrown out the bait, only to reel it back in, time and time again. 

Now, with only one year left on his contract, will they consider trading him this offseason? Not according to president of baseball operations Peter Bendix, as noted in the Miami Herald.

As for Alcantara, Bendix — citing club policy of not discussing contracts — declined to say if the Marlins will exercise his $21 million team option next season or whether they will try to extend his contract beyond that. But a source said the Marlins have no plans to trade Alcantara this offseason.

In fact, it was only a couple of days ago that Alcantara expressed a desire to finish his career with the Fish.

Sandy Alcántara told us that he would like to continue closing, but that would depend on how he is feeling as well as where they are in the season.

"I've been here with the Marlins for the last nine years, why can't I keep myself here? I love this organization so much."

Alcantara finished the 2026 season as a closer, working out the bullpen. He recorded the first three saves of his career. But on the season, he pitched a major league high 214 innings and was second in quality starts (21), obviously no longer feeling any effects from the Tommy John surgery that kept him out of the 2024 season. 

He finished the year with a 3.87 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. No longer an ace, but certainly a significant contributor to the Marlins' staff.
