Insiders Project Bo Bichette's Future: Will He Opt Out?

 Will he or won't he? Bo Bichette was signed to an insane $42 million AAV three-year contract by the NY Mets last offseason. But after a mediocre year for the former star infielder, it's genuinely a "coin flip" whether he exercises an opt-out, according to Jeff Passan.

Bichette still has two remaining years at $42 million per season.

Bichette has had his second disappointing season in the last three, with a renaissance year with the Toronto Blue Jays squeezed in the middle, in 2025. 

2024 was by far the worst year of his eight-year career, when injuries played a role, but when he was in the lineup, he was atrocious, with just four home runs and a .225 average with a 70 OPS+ in 81 games. This year with New York, it was slightly better than that, with 16 homers, a .264 average and a 97 OPS+. But that's still below average. 

So why would he consider opting out coming off a brutal year? According to Passan, he would be "hopeful that the mediocrity of the rest of the (free agent) class makes him stand out in ways he didn’t last winter."

He would get a $5M buyout, and try his hand at free agency again. Only this time, he won't be coming off a World Series appearance, and a regular-season .311 average and .840 OPS with 94 RBIs.

But as Will Sammon reports in The Athletic, Bichette really seems to like it with the Mets.

“I’m having a great time here; I’m enjoying my teammates, and I think that the future here is bright,” Bichette said on Saturday. “The team is building something good... So that’s exciting for me. But I’m focused on finishing the season strong, and I’ll make that decision when it comes.”

"At this juncture, it’s easier to see Bichette staying put."
