Padres Rejected Surprising Trade Offer From Yankees

A reported New York Yankees trade offer for a top late-inning arm has turned into a case of he-said, she-said.

Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the San Diego Padres rejected a deal that would have sent left-handed reliever Adrian Morejon to New York in exchange for right-hander Will Warren.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman disputes that a formal offer was ever made at all.

The Denial

Per Jorge Castillo of ESPN, Cashman flatly refuted the report.

"We never had a discussion with San Diego that way," Cashman said.

The Athletic's Brendan Kuty and Dennis Lin backed that account, reporting a source told them the Yankees "never even made a Warren-for-Morejon formal offer to the Padres." They noted New York had checked in with San Diego on the reliever, but it remains unclear exactly what the two sides actually discussed.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported a similar version, that no formal deal was ever submitted.

Why The Fit Made Sense Either Way

Morejon has been one of the best relievers in baseball dating back to his 2024 breakout, posting a 2.62 ERA over 196 innings, the third-most frames among any reliever in that span. 

This season he carries a 3.07 ERA with a 27.8 percent strikeout rate, a 6.2 percent walk rate, and a career-best 61.5 percent ground-ball rate, the fourth-highest mark among qualified relievers.

New York already has the second-best bullpen ERA in the majors behind only the division-rival Red Sox, and adding another shutdown arm would have made an already strong unit even more dangerous for October.

Warren, meanwhile, has quietly been a rotation fixture in the Bronx, going 8-5 with a 4.14 ERA across 21 starts. His peripherals, a 3.77 xFIP, a 3.94 SIERA, and a 3.96 FIP, all suggest he's pitched better than his ERA reflects, and he turned in a strong final start before the deadline, holding the Cubs scoreless over 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Whether a real offer was ever on the table or the whole story was a case of crossed signals, the outcome is the same. Warren stayed in New York, and Morejon stayed in San Diego, at least for this season.
