Tigers Deal Casey Mize To Padres In 4-Player Trade

The San Diego Padres kept pushing their rotation upgrade even further at the deadline.

Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Padres are acquiring right-hander Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman from the Detroit Tigers.

In return, the Tigers receive left-handers Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf.

Why Mize's Value Spiked

Detroit had already traded ace Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier in deadline week, and once that blockbuster went through, rival executives quickly identified Mize as the best remaining rotation piece left on the market.

"Best rental," one rival GM told Heyman. "Great competitor."

With Skubal gone and no longer holding up the market, contenders who missed out on him turned their full attention to Mize, and San Diego moved fast to secure him.

The Season Behind The Price Tag

Mize is in the midst of a career year, and the numbers back up the hype.

The former No. 1 overall pick from 2018 carries a 2.70 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and a career-high 24.9 percent strikeout rate across 16 starts, all while pitching through two separate groin-related injured list stints.

He was scratched from his Friday start against the Athletics as the deadline approached, a clear signal the Tigers were being cautious about protecting his trade value before finalizing a deal.

Mize is a pending free agent set to hit the open market this winter, making him a rental for San Diego rather than a long-term piece, but exactly the kind of frontline rotation boost a contender wants for a stretch run.

What Detroit Gets Back

The Tigers add two left-handed arms in the deal.

Wolf has already accumulated big league experience, giving Detroit a controllable option as it restocks after moving both Skubal and Mize within the same week.

Mayfield adds further pitching depth to an organization that made clear all week it intended to maximize the return on its expiring rotation pieces rather than simply hold on for a long-shot playoff push.

San Diego entered deadline day squarely in need of rotation help, and landing both a Skubal-caliber name would have been a fantasy, but pivoting to Mize gives the Padres a legit frontline complement behind their existing group.

Adding Workman on top of the pitching return gives San Diego some extra lineup versatility as well.
