Reid Detmers Could Head To 1 of 2 Central Div. Contenders

The MLB trade deadline is now less than a week away, and rumors are ramping up. The problem this season is that there aren't many out-and-out sellers on the market, with so many teams, especially in the American League, still in the running for a Wild Card spot.

But one team that shouldn't have any problem identifying their lot in life is the LA Angels. They are dead last in the AL and tied for last in the entire majors, with a 42-65 mark. The only thing is, the Angels have been notorious "hoarders", so to speak, collecting and hanging on to their assets well past the time they should have. "Selling" at the deadline has been a rarity for them. 

But a new GM is in place this year for the first time this decade, in John Mozeliak. And with that, two tradeable starting pitchers are actually on the trade block. For Reid Detmers, he exploded onto teams' radars in June, when over three straight starts, he surrendered just one total earned run and lowered his ERA by 100 points. And just ahead of that, on May 24th, he racked up a career-best 14 strikeouts over eight brilliant innings, giving up just 1 run and 0 walks against the Texas Rangers. 

If he is traded, there's one city that he might wind up in, as the North & South Side of Chicago battle over his services, according to Russell Dorsey of Yahoo Sports. 

Multiple sources tell Yahoo Sports that the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox have each shown interest in Angels left-hander Reid Detmers... 

Both Chicago teams are in need of starting pitching and have cast a wide net as they look for reinforcements.

Cubs have Reid Detmers on their radar 

The Cubs are certainly in dire need of rotation help, with injuries having ravaged their staff this season. They also just DFA'd a 10-year veteran from their starting staff.  Cade Horton is out for the season after having Tommy John surgery, while former ace Justin Steele missed almost the entire 2025 season also due to elbow surgery and won't be rejoining the rotation in '26. 

Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera, two more key pieces who've been added to the rotation this year, are also out for a while. 

White Sox desperate for rotation help, eyeing Detmers

The White Sox, who are likely to make a wildly unexpected return to the postseason this year, desperately need another established starter to join their only two reliable rotation hands, Sean Burke and Davis Martin. And in the latter's case, we're being generous, as Martin has a 6.00 ERA over his last four starts. 

It's nice and all that the ChiSox could make an appearance in the playoffs, but with their current starting staff as is, it would likely be short-lived. Detmers would be a nice addition that wouldn't force them to have to dip into their top-10 stash of prospects.
