Padres DFA Reliever With Career 3.19 ERA

The San Diego Padres have designated reliever Ron Marinaccio for assignment.

The move came as part of a bigger pitching shuffle on Sunday.

San Diego reinstated right-hander Randy Vasquez from the 15-day injured list and brought back left-hander Wandy Peralta from the bereavement list, while optioning right-hander Jhony Brito to Triple-A El Paso.

The Roster Crunch

Vasquez returns after a near-minimum stint for a right ankle contusion.

He was a serviceable back-end starter in 2025, posting a 3.70 ERA across 129 innings out of the rotation, but has taken a step back this season with a 4.71 ERA in 84 innings and a 7.12 expected ERA that suggests he has been fortunate to even reach that mark.

His 7.3 percent walk rate is better than average, but he has not missed bats and has already surrendered 14 home runs.

Marinaccio was the casualty of the numbers game.

The 31-year-old right-hander made the Padres' Opening Day roster this season but bounced between San Diego and Triple-A El Paso, where he posted a 4.91 ERA across 40.1 innings.

His Career

Marinaccio was originally a Yankees product, making his MLB debut in 2022 and spending three seasons in New York before being claimed by the White Sox and then traded to San Diego for cash in January 2025.

He owns a solid career 3.19 ERA with 174 strikeouts across parts of five major league seasons, and posted a sparkling 0.84 ERA in seven appearances during his first year with the Padres.

The Padres have lost their first two games out of the All-Star break, and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller told reporters last week that the team is on the fence about whether to buy or sell ahead of the August 3 deadline.

With Griffin Canning, German Marquez, and Walker Buehler all impending free agents, a selling scenario could open up rotation opportunities down the stretch.

Marinaccio will head to waivers in the coming days.
