MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees Would Get Post-Hype Sleeper From A's in Proposed Deal
As the trade deadline approaches quickly, we know that the New York Yankees will be active. They're within 3.0 games of the Tampa Bay Rays for top spot in the AL East, and have a big lead atop the Wild Card chase.
The Bronx Bombers' offense has woken up a bit of late, with 26 runs in their last four games, all wins. But in a 20-game stretch right before that, they went 5-15 with the worst offense in baseball over that period, with a .186 team batting average.
Yes, Aaron Judge will be back sometime in August, but the Yankees would still like to bring in another bat. And for that, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report has proposed a trade that would bring them a former A's top prospect, who can now best be described as a post-hype sleeper.
Zach Gelof was a Top 3 prospect in the organization in 2022 and 2023, and he had a great start to his major league career in a half season in '23. But it's been a disappointment since then, due to injuries and underperformance. Gelof, now 26, has finally arrived in 2026. With a .273 average and .802 OPS, he's a key part of the A's offense.
Miller suggests a trade that would put Gelof in Pinstripes.
New York Yankees receive:
- Zack Gelof
Athletics receive:
- RHP Carlos Lagrange (Yanks No. 4 prospect)
- RHP Eric Reyzelman
Gelof could fit into the Yankees lineup in several places, with the versatility to play second, third and all three outfield spots.
Lagrange, a massive 6'7" right-hander, is just one step away from the majors, at Triple-A. He's the Yankees' No. 4 prospect.
Reyzelman is New York's 28th-ranked prospect, and a little bit more of a long shot, but with the A's pitching staff hurting badly, they should be throwing as many darts at the board as possible in the hopes of hitting a bull's eye. They currently rank 29th out of 30 teams in ERA, WHIP and batting average against.
