Mariners Intensifying Luis Castillo Trade Talks

The Seattle Mariners have made it clear they are willing to deal from their greatest strength, and Luis Castillo has emerged as the pitcher most likely to be moved before the August 3 deadline.

Per Ryan Divish and Adam Jude of MLB.com, the Mariners are listening on Castillo and right-hander Emerson Hancock, with a growing possibility that at least one of them is moved before Monday.

Castillo would be the preference, though he presents the more complicated situation of the two.

Why Seattle Is Shopping Him

Castillo is the only member of Seattle's starting five who was not homegrown, and he is also the oldest and most expensive, which makes him the natural candidate for a rotation that has become the envy of the league.

Sources have indicated the Mariners do not intend to move Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryce Miller, or Bryan Woo, leaving Castillo and Hancock as the two names in play.

Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Seattle has been telling teams it is willing to trade one of its prized starters in exchange for a right-handed hitter and a high-leverage reliever, the two areas the club has needed for months.

The Contract Complication

The obstacle is money.

Castillo is owed roughly $32.5 million through next season and carries a $25 million vesting option for 2028 that kicks in if he reaches 180 innings in 2027.

His performance has not helped his value, as the 33-year-old has posted a 4.93 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP this season, tracking toward career-worsts across the board.

Other clubs likely view the deal as underwater, which is why the Mariners are reportedly willing to eat some of the money to line up a favorable return.

Seattle does not need to move Castillo for payroll space, as the club sits comfortably below the luxury-tax threshold, so the Mariners can afford to prioritize the return even if it means paying part of his salary to play elsewhere.

Where Things Stand

The Mariners are competing for the AL West and a Wild Card spot despite a middling record, and their lineup, particularly against left-handed pitching, badly needs reinforcement.

Whether Seattle ultimately moves Castillo, Hancock, or both, the front office has indicated it is finally ready to trade from its deepest position group to address its most glaring needs.
