Trade Interest Picking Up in Mets' Luis Robert Jr.

The New York Mets are heading into the August 3 deadline as clear sellers, and an unexpected name has emerged as a trade chip.

Per Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, Luis Robert Jr. is generating preliminary trade interest from multiple teams.

"Mets center fielder Luis Robert Jr., who just returned from the injured list Monday after missing more than two months with a spine issue, is generating preliminary trade interest from multiple teams," Rosenthal and Sammon reported.

Why The Interest Is Surprising

The numbers do not exactly scream trade target.

Robert is slashing .211/.306/.337 with three home runs across 108 plate appearances, and he was reinstated from the 60-day injured list on Monday after missing nearly three months with disc inflammation in his back.

The Mets acquired him from the Chicago White Sox in January, picking up the entirety of his $20 million salary, and the rebound flier has largely been a disappointment.

He has played more than 110 games in a season just once in his seven-year career.

Why Teams Are Calling Anyway

Per Rosenthal and Sammon, the Philadelphia Phillies and a handful of other teams are looking for right-handed hitting outfield help, especially in center field, and there simply are not many available.

Robert has also been one of the better defensive center fielders in baseball since his 2020 debut, and he showed flashes of what he can still do in just his second game back, launching a 451-foot home run in Milwaukee.

Teams like the Rays, Astros, Pirates, and Guardians have all been mentioned as clubs hunting outfield help.

The Financial Angle

After August 3, Robert is owed roughly $5.9 million plus a $2 million buyout on a $20 million club option for 2027 that no team is likely to exercise.

The Mets have been reportedly reluctant to eat money to facilitate deadline trades, but they will likely need to make an exception here given the injury history.

There is no reason for New York to hold him past the deadline, as the outfield picture is set with Juan Soto, Carson Benge, and A.J. Ewing.

Interim manager Andy Green will look to get Robert into the lineup over the next two weeks as a showcase for interested clubs.
