Blue Jays' George Springer Heads to Red Sox In Proposed Deal

George Springer is not having a great send-off season in the final year of his contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. The 36-year-old has had a dreadful season, batting just .229 with a .708 OPS and just 11 homers. Not quite the way he wants to go into free agency. 

Nevertheless, teams will remember his heroic playoff performances in his career (including his clutch HR in last year's epic Game 7 of the ALCS). 

And he reminded Jays fans and rival teams (and the Boston Red Sox, in particular) of what he's capable of on Saturday, with a three-run blast that cinched a 6-0 win at Fenway Park.
Will the Red Sox take the hint and try to acquire the legendary postseason performer at the trade deadline? Mitch Bannon in The Athletic figures they might, and has proposed this mock trade that would send the former World Series MVP to Beantown:

Red Sox receive:
  • George Springer, OF/DH

Blue Jays receive:
  • LHP Jojo Ingrassia (A+)

For the Red Sox, adding a guy like Springer who thrives on the postseason spotlight would be a terrific way of arming themselves for the playoffs. Whether it's at DH or in the outfield, where he could replace the woeful .193 hitting Jarren Duran (.597 OPS, 68 OPS+) on occasion, Springer should be a target for the BoSox.

Ingrassia, the left-handed prospect who would come back to Toronto in this hypothetic trade, is Boston’s 30th-ranked prospect, but hasn't progressed much since dominating Single-A in 2024 with a 1.85 ERA and 14.3 K/9. He's still in High A this year, with a 3.51 ERA and 12.5 K/9 but also 4.8 walks per nine.

But hey, another JoJo in the prospect pipeline can't be all bad (19-year-old shortstop JoJo Parker is currently the Jays' No. 1 prospect).
