5 Mets Labeled Untouchable; Everyone Else Up For Grabs At Deadline

The New York Mets are one of the few certified sellers on the market as we quickly approach the trade deadline on August 3rd. How much of a seller will they be? According to reports, they have informed teams around baseball that everyone on the roster is up for grabs—except for five 'untouchables.'

  • Juan Soto
  • Nolan McLean
  • Carson Benge
  • AJ Ewing
  • Christian Scott

Don't come to GM David Stearns asking for any of the above quintet. But the Mets are already fielding calls on all other players.

Soto, of course, needs no explanation. He's set in New York for good, with his $765M contract, and his annual MVP credentials.

McLean came into the year as the young phenom on the pitching staff. And though he struggled mightily through a dreadful stretch in May, he has otherwise held ERAs in the mid-2.00s or lower in each of the other three months of the year. He's still the stud ace in the making, and isn't going anywhere.

His fellow rotation mate, Christian Scott, has been a revelation thus far in his rookie campaign. Another five shutout innings—in Philly—on Thursday has him destined for a place in Mets fans' hearts, as well.

Exciting young outfielders, and recent top prospects, Benge and Ewing, are showing the earmarks of legit major leaguers as well.

But as for everyone else? Give 'em your best offer. That is quite the notable list the Mets are listening on:
  • Francisco Lindor
  • Bo Bichette (who will likely opt-out at year's end and become a free agent once again)
  • Francisco Alvarez
  • Marcus Semien
  • Freddy Peralta
  • Clay Holmes
  • Luke Weaver
  • Devin Williams

SNY's Chelsea Janes said, "As the second half begins Thursday night, it seems the time has come: A rival executive said the Mets informed their team that the sale is on, and that everyone but young stars Carson Benge, AJ Ewing, Christian Scott, Nolan McLean and the obvious, Juan Soto, is available.

"That doesn’t mean everyone will go. But it means the Mets will listen on just about everyone, which is in keeping with what people familiar with their thinking have signaled for weeks."

New York is currently second from the bottom in the National League, 11.5 games back of a Wild Card spot. Let the fire sale begin.
