MLB Trade Rumors: Top 3 Landing Spots For Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras is only in his first season with the Boston Red Sox, but he already has a pretty good idea of the chaos that can surround the franchise when things aren't going well. The first baseman is already finding himself on the rumor mill as a trade possibility with the deadline approaching in just over a month.
The 34-year-old is having an excellent season, on pace for the best numbers of his career with 17 homers, 50 RBIs, a .281 average and .904 OPS. With one more season plus a club option on his contract, the chance to sell HIGH and cash in is there for the BoSox, if they want to take it.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report has named some potential landing spots for Contreras on the trade market. Let's look at the top three.
Cleveland Guardians
Rymer proposes that this is the best landing spot for Contreras. With the Guards sitting 27th in OPS from their first basemen this season, 28th in batting average and 24th in home runs, they could certainly use a first base boost. He even suggests they offer No. 8 prospect Jaison Chourio in return.
Arizona Diamondbacks
About the only team that's more woeful at first base production this season than Cleveland is the D-Backs. Recent starter Pavin Smith is certainly not the answer, and Ildemaro Vargas has fallen off a cliff the past couple of months. If the Snakes are still planning to fight for a Wild Card berth this year, they'll need to plug this gaping hole in their lineup. Contreras would do the trick.
Seattle Mariners
Another team that surprisingly finds itself hurting for production out of first base, considering they spent a heckuva lot of money to bring back Josh Naylor on a $92M deal over five years. He's produced a mere .678 OPS this season with just eight home runs. It would seem a little excessive to go out and get Contreras now with Naylor still around, but this is a win-now year for Seattle, and they can't afford a lack of power at a position like first base.
