MLB Trade Rumors: Matt Chapman Linked To 3 Teams At Trade Deadline
The San Francisco Giants would like to be in sell mode. Specifically, on their big-name, big-money veterans. That would include Rafael Devers, Willy Adames and Matt Chapman.
But according to insider Jeff Passan, only one of those three is realistically tradeable.
"Nobody is taking Rafael Devers unless San Francisco pays down significantly the $211 million he is owed after this season or takes on bad contracts. The same goes for Willy Adames, whose defense has gone in the wrong direction. Chapman's glove salvages his value and puts him at least in play."
Additionally, Chapman has had a solid offensive season, with his batting average at an eight-year high .252.
With that, we have a look at three teams that are linked to a potential Matt Chapman trade, per insider Mark Feinsand at mlb.com.
New York Yankees
Ryan McMahon is having his second consecutive dreadful year at the plate in New York, and if the Yankees are going to be a real contender this season, they'll need to bolster the hot corner. Chapman would be a big boon to the squad.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phils, if you recall, made a big push for free agent Bo Bichette this past offseason, who they would have installed at third base like the Mets have done.
Incumbent 3B Alec Bohm is in the final year of his contract, and has had a roller coaster season, which included the worst start by a hitter through 23 games in Philadelphia Phillies history.
Insider Robert Murray notes that "A rival executive thought that the Philadelphia Phillies make sense for Chapman."
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cards are surprisingly in the thick of the Wild Card race, currently sitting in the top WC spot in the NL. Rather than being sellers, which is what observers thought they would be, the Cards should be buying. And while, right now, they've got an untested rookie, Blaze Jordan, doing well at third since his call-up, it's only been seven games, and there's no guarantee that continues.
Of course, the $100M left on Chapman's deal through the 2030 season would also make St. Louis the unlikeliest of this list of suitors, despite Feinsand's report.
