Pirates Demote a Top Prospect Despite .405 Avg, 1.058 OPS This Spring

How much better are the Pittsburgh Pirates this season? Good enough that they feel they don't need a top prospect on the cusp of the majors that accumulated a .405 average this spring with a 1.058 OPS. They are optioning Jhostynxon Garcia (aka "The Password") to the minors.

Garcia, acquired in a notable trade from the Boston Red Sox this offseason, also displayed solid defensive skills in the outfield. He comes into the 2026 season as the Pirates' third-ranked prospect among position players (6th overall).

He hit two homers, scored nine runs and stole three bases in his terrific spring that covered 17 games and 41 plate appearances. He had a .463 OBP to go with his .405 average and 1.058 OPS.

Last season in the high minors (AA & AAA), he posted an .810 OPS with 21 homers and a .340 OBP. MLB Pipeline says he "brings impressive strength and right-handed raw power to the Pirates," along with "a strong arm...

"He showed up to Pirate City as soon as he was allowed in February, making a very strong first impression."

Possessing probably the best nickname in baseball these days, The Password gets that moniker due to the fact that his first name, with a confusing jumble of letters, looks like it could be a computer password.

Not to be outdone, the Venezuelan also has a younger brother in the Red Sox system, Johanfran, who has garnered the nickname "The Username."

Despite starting the year in the minors, the Pirates' Password should be verified as a major leaguer before too long this season.
