MLB Free Agent Rumors: 4 Teams In On Former #1 Prospect Yoan Moncada

He was the #1 prospect in all of baseball (per MLB Pipeline) in 2017. But Yoan Moncada never quite reached the levels that he was projected for in the majors. His one elite season in 2019 quickly devolved into five straight disappointing years.

Moncada made a bit of a turnaround in 2025, however, and according to a report from MLB insider and journalist Francys Romero, there are four teams interested in the 31-year-old Cuban infielder in this year's free agent pool.

Moncada was only able to play in 84 games in 2025 due to injuries, but he had 12 home runs with a .783 OPS with the LA Angels, and showed some signs of life to be able to be a decent contributor at third base.

With that, these four teams are named as suitors for Moncada:

  • Los Angeles Angels
  • Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Chicago White Sox
  • Toronto Blue Jays

The first three on this list are no surprise. The Angels saw what Moncada can do in his short time with the team, while the Pirates and White Sox have been surprisingly active teams this offseason, still looking to add more offense. It wouldn't be a surprise to see any of those cautiously spending teams make a run at Moncada with a reasonably-priced offer.

The Blue Jays, however, are a puzzling addition to this group. They have a combination of Addison Barger and Ernie Clement to play third base. However, if Bo Bichette isn't re-signed, and the Jays aren't able to bring in a big bat for the outfield (either Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger), Clement would move to second base, and Barger would be spending a lot of time in right field, perhaps splitting time there with George Springer. That could open up at-bats at third.

The Jays are also showing interest in another, much bigger free agent third baseman as well, in Alex Bregman.

Moncada, in 10 major league seasons, has batted .252 with a .758 OPS and an above-average OPS+ at 107.
