Breaking: Marlins & Dodgers Pull Off Trade for Former Stolen Base Champion

We have a trade to report on this Monday, as the Miami Marlins have swung a deal with the LA Dodgers for speed demon outfielder Esteury Ruiz.

In return, the Fish send 18-year-old Cuban right-hander pitcher Adriano Marrero to the Dodgers. He was signed by the Marlins last January and threw 33 innings in the Dominican Summer League with 35 strikeouts.

Ruiz, 26, led the American League with 67 stolen bases just two years ago, with the Oakland A's. He ranked in the 97th percentile in sprint speed.

The outfielder hasn't seen much action in the majors, however, over the last two years, with just 29 games with the A's in 2024, and only 19 games with the Dodgers this past season. His numbers at Triple-A have been sensational, though, with another 63 stolen bases in 2025, along with 16 homers, a .304 average and .923 OPS.

Adding another outfielder who can contribute simply boosts the Marlins' strongest area, as they already have more capable outfielders than starting spots. Jakob Marsee, Kyle Stowers and Griffin Conine are expected to be the starters. But there is other depth, including Dane Myers.

Ruiz has played a bit of second base in the minors, it remains to be seen if that's something the Fish may try him at.
