Mets' Pete Alonso Makes Decision on His Future Minutes After Team's Collapse is Complete

The New York Mets completed what is arguably the worst collapse in team history, getting eliminated from the playoffs on the final day of the regular season, with a 4-0 loss to the Miami Marlins. And it took mere minutes after the realization set in for their longest-serving star, Pete Alonso, to add insult to injury.

Alonso has made official what nearly every baseball observer has expected since the season began, as he announced that he will opt out of his contract and become a free agent once again.

Last winter, the Mets played games with Alonso in free agency, knowing his options elsewhere were extremely limited, and eventually forced him to return on a far-less-than-market-value two-year deal for $54 million.

But it's that player option for 2026 that will now allow Polar Bear to come out of hibernation this winter and hit the market with an All-Star 38-HR, 126-RBI season under his belt, and undoubtedly land that nine-figure deal he was hoping for.

This is the fourth time in the past 28 years that the Mets were eliminated from a potential postseason berth on the final day of the regular season. They held as large as a 10-game lead on the Cincinnati Reds earlier in the season, the team that usurped them for the final Wild Card berth.
