Red Sox DFA Pitcher With Phenomenal Minor-League Stats

Boston Red Sox pitcher Nick Burdi pitches during 2025 game.

In a move to bolster their bullpen, the Boston Red Sox have designated veteran reliever Nick Burdi for assignment, freeing up a spot on the 40-man roster for left-hander Jovani Morán.

Burdi, who had been a reliable depth piece for the Sox in 2025, pitched well in Triple-A Worcester with a 1.88 ERA and a 32.7% strikeout rate. However, despite a strong showing in the minors, Burdi struggled to secure a permanent spot on the MLB roster, appearing in only four games for Boston this season. His release opens the door for Morán, a key acquisition in last year's trade with the Minnesota Twins, to make his return to the majors.

Red Sox Designate Nick Burdi for Assignment, Promote Jovani Morán

Morán, who has been recovering from Tommy John surgery, has impressed in Worcester with a solid 3.44 ERA and a striking 35.1% strikeout rate. He hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2023 but is known for his swing-and-miss stuff and potential to strengthen the Red Sox bullpen.

The 28-year-old Morán was a standout for the Minnesota Twins in 2022, logging a 2.21 ERA and showing promise as a valuable reliever. The Red Sox hope that his return to form will provide a much-needed boost to their bullpen for the remainder of the season.

Burdi will now await waivers, and it remains to be seen if another team will take a chance on the 31-year-old reliever, who still has potential despite the injury setbacks that have slowed his career.
