MLB Rumors: Baltimore Orioles DFA Third Baseman

Baltimore Orioles infielder Vimael Machin rounds the bases during 2025 game.

The Baltimore Orioles announced several roster moves, headlined by infielder Vimael Machin being designated for assignment and rookie pitcher Brandon Young transferred to the 60-day injured list, ending his season.

To fill those spots, the team selected the contracts of infielder Emmanuel Rivera and right-hander Roansy Contreras from Triple-A Norfolk.

Machin Out, Rivera In

Machin, 31, earned a brief call-up earlier this month, appearing in his first major league action since 2022. He went just 1-for-12 at the plate, though his lone hit was a memorable home run. Despite his struggles in the majors (he owns a career .204 batting average), Machin has been a steady Triple-A performer with a .289/.371/.449 line across nearly 1,400 plate appearances.

Baltimore opted for Rivera, who impressed late last season but has struggled to replicate that success in 2025. Still, his defensive stability gives the Orioles more reliability in the infield while Jordan Westburg remains on the injured list.

Young’s Rookie Season Cut Short

For Young, a 27-year-old undrafted free agent who debuted this season, the move to the 60-day IL confirms what many expected after his recent hamstring strain. He finished his rookie campaign with a 6.24 ERA across 12 starts, showing flashes of potential, including 7.2 perfect innings against Houston and an immaculate inning against the New York Mets, but also allowing 12 home runs in just under 58 innings.

With six more years of team control and minor league options remaining, Young should remain in Baltimore’s plans as a depth starter heading into 2026.
