After an injury scare earlier this week to Boston's starting catcher Carlos Narváez, the team has jumped into action to finally acquire some depth behind the plate. The Sox did not want to be left with .160-hitting Connor Wong as their only option at catcher.
Narvaez was limping after running out a ground ball in Tuesday night's game, and might have to be placed on the injured list with a knee issue.
Sanchez was DFA'd by the Jays on Tuesday, thereby going on waivers.
The 28-year-old backstop has 46 games total of major league experience across part of four seasons (2020, 2021, 2024, 2025). He played in eight games with the Blue Jays this year (seven at catcher, one at first base) with a slash line of .238/.238/.333 in just 21 at-bats.
Sanchez has fared well, however, at Triple-A Buffalo, where he's batted .279/.347/.419 with six home runs, 28 RBIs and a .766 OPS. With only three errors behind the plate in 374 innings, he had a .993 fielding percentage.
The Red Sox plan to have Sanchez join the team in San Diego where they're playing a series this weekend. He's out of minor league options, so will be on the big league roster.
Boston is just four games back of Toronto for top spot in the AL East heading into Friday's play.
