MLB Rumors: Athletics DFA Infielder After Red-Hot Start To Season

Athletics second baseman Luis Urias hits the ball during 2025 game.

The Athletics have made a roster shuffle, designating infielder Luis Urías for assignment and recalling Zack Gelof from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The move ends Urías’ brief stint in Oakland while giving Gelof, once considered a cornerstone prospect, another opportunity to seize the second base job.

Urías fades after strong start

Signed to a one-year, $1.1 million deal in February, Urías carried the A’s in the first half with steady production and eight home runs. But since the All-Star break, his bat has gone ice cold, hitting just .197 with a .246 slugging percentage. With his contract set to expire and his trade value diminished, the Athletics opted to move on and clear space on the 40-man roster. Urías now heads to waivers, where he could attract interest from contenders in need of infield depth.

Gelof gets another shot at second base

Gelof began the year on the injured list but has since rediscovered his swing in Triple-A, where he blasted 11 home runs in just over a month of action. The 25-year-old struggled in a brief July call-up, but with the Athletics out of contention, the front office is prioritizing player development.

Gelof is expected to handle most of the second base reps down the stretch, joining an all-rookie infield as the organization evaluates its future pieces for 2026.
