MLB Trade Rumors: Cubs & Royals Becoming Trade Partners
The Chicago Cubs are looking at pitching as the deadline approaches in a week. They need one more top-flight starter for the rotation to follow Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd.
They've been linked to a number of names, but insider Jon Morosi specifically points to the Cubs checking in with the Kansas City Royals about Seth Lugo. They didn't have to look far on Wednesday, as they got a close-up view at Wrigley Field, with Lugo pitching a solid six innings against them, allowing just four hits and two runs, while striking out six.
The Cubs have checked in with the Royals ahead of the trade deadline, sources say. This is not a surprise. The Cubs need pitching; KC is more likely to move Seth Lugo (starting tomorrow at Wrigley) than All-Star LHP Kris Bubic. @MLBNetwork @WatchMarquee @670TheScore

Lugo is having his second straight sensational season as a Royal, and his third straight since converting to a starter after toiling as a reliever for the previous five seasons. In 2025, Lugo, who will be a free agent at year's end, has a 2.95 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP.
The 35-year-old was the runner-up for AL Cy Young in 2024, going 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA for KC, and earning his first All-Star berth and Gold Glove award.
The Cubs have also been said to be interested in a shiny new name that's emerged on the starting pitching market as well. They are also looking long and hard at top closer Emmanuel Clase.
