MLB Trade Rumors: Giants Expressing Interest In Pirates Infielder

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa fields the ball during 2025 game.

The San Francisco Giants have expressed trade interest in Pittsburgh Pirates utilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa, per Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

With second base a weak spot for the Giants, whose .217 team average at the position ranks among MLB's worst, the 30-year-old Kiner-Falefa presents a potential upgrade. While his .274/.318/.340 slash line is below average by wRC+, his defensive versatility and contact-oriented approach make him an appealing stopgap.

Giants Interested in Kiner-Falefa to Bolster Infield

Kiner-Falefa is in the final year of a two-year, $15 million deal and has played primarily at shortstop for Pittsburgh this season. However, his resume includes over 500 innings each at second and third base, plus stints in the outfield and even behind the plate.

He's stolen 12 bases on 15 attempts and rarely strikes out, fanning in just 16.2% of plate appearances, attributes that could help steady a Giants lineup that’s lacked consistency.

Given the Pirates’ position as sellers and Kiner-Falefa’s expiring contract, a deal seems likely before the deadline. San Francisco has already made big moves by acquiring Rafael Devers and signing Willy Adames, and adding Kiner-Falefa would be a lower-cost, defense-first move to round out the infield.

If a deal materializes, Pittsburgh could give reps to recent acquisition Cam Devanney or test other prospects as the rebuild rolls on.
