MLB Trade Rumors: Cubs Eyeing Two 3rd Baseman Ahead Of Deadline

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell walks to the mound during 2025 game.

With the Chicago Cubs locked in a heated NL Central race, they’re reportedly exploring third base upgrades, and two names keep surfacing: Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suarez and Colorado Rockies veteran Ryan McMahon.

According to multiple reports, including Jon Heyman and Jim Bowden, the Cubs have inquired on Suarez, whose 36 home runs and 86 RBIs make him the most impactful bat on the trade market. However, with the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees also in the mix, Chicago may pivot to McMahon as a more affordable alternative.

Cubs Target Suarez, McMahon in Search for Third Base Upgrade

The Cubs, sitting at 60-41 and trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by a single game, are clearly in win-now mode. After landing Kyle Tucker in a blockbuster deal, they’re looking to build around their current core with another offensive jolt. Rookie Matt Shaw has struggled at third, batting just .216, which makes Suarez an enticing target despite defensive concerns. If Arizona’s asking price is too high, McMahon offers versatility and a lefty bat that could platoon with Shaw, though his .711 OPS is modest by comparison.

Both options present risks and rewards, and the Cubs may ultimately need Colorado to eat salary if they go the McMahon route.
