MLB Trade Rumors: 3 Surprising Teams That Were Interested in a Devers Trade
The Boston Red Sox decided earlier this week that they could no longer co-exist with star slugger Rafael Devers, and dealt him to the San Francisco Giants. But that wasn't the only team that was trying to get their hands on the three-time All-Star, according to a report.
Sam McAdam of MassLive wrote that three other teams inquired about their chances of trading for Devers:
Atlanta Braves
Certainly, the Braves are in desperate need for a big shot in the arm, as they sit at eight games under .500 going into Friday's games, 13 games back of the NL East division lead, and 7.5 back of a Wild Card spot. They are no better than 15th or lower in the majors in most main offensive categories.
San Diego Padres
Another National League team that had interest was the Padres, who currently hold the 3rd Wild Card spot, and are in-tough, battling with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants for supremacy in the NL West. The Friars' offense is far worse than the Braves, at 27th in the majors in home runs, and 20th in OPS. Adding Devers' bat would have been a huge boost to their playoff chances.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays always throw their hat in the ring for any superstar who becomes available, but always come up short. With their $500 million man, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., having another of his pedestrian seasons on offense with just eight homers and 31 RBIs, they could have seriously used the massive power of Devers in their lineup as they once again fancy themselves a potential playoff contender.
And wouldn't that have been a kick in the head for Red Sox fans if Devers had gone to their hated division rival Blue Jays?
But it's the Giants who are the beneficiaries of Boston's falling out with the slugger. And he's even already agreed to do one thing for San Francisco that he refused to do with the Red Sox.
