MLB Trade Rumors: White Sox & Padres Linked To Trade For Slugger

Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. hits a double during 2025 game.

Luis Robert Jr. is again at the center of MLB trade rumors, with ESPN's Jeff Passan identifying him as the Chicago White Sox's top trade chip ahead of the 2025 deadline.

Despite batting just .177 with a .552 OPS through 55 games, Robert's defensive upside and base-stealing ability keep him relevant in trade talks. His 2023 All-Star campaign, where he hit 38 home runs, still looms large in the minds of general managers seeking a high-ceiling gamble. San Diego, desperate to upgrade its left field production, appears to be the most serious suitor.

Padres in Need, White Sox Ready to Deal

The Padres' left fielders have been among the worst in baseball this year, combining for a .191 average and virtually no power. Robert, though underperforming, offers elite defense and leads the league in steals.

With the White Sox looking to shed salary and accelerate their rebuild, Robert's contract—$15 million this year with $20 million team options in 2026 and 2027—has become a tradeable asset if Chicago lowers its asking price. The Padres could structure a deal involving relievers like Wandy Peralta or Yuki Matsui to offset salary, while prospects such as Kash Mayfield or Boston Bateman could sweeten the return.

Trade Could Spark Rebuild, Playoff Push

For the White Sox, parting with Robert would be a definitive shift toward a full rebuild, even though that's probably already undeniable. With prospects like Colson Montgomery rising, flipping Robert for pitching and cost-controlled talent could reshape the franchise's future.

For San Diego, acquiring Robert is a high-risk, high-reward move: if he rebounds, the Padres solidify one of MLB's best defensive outfields and add needed pop to the lineup. If he doesn't, the financial commitment is steep.
